Feeling Overwhelmed?

I hear ya.

Whether it’s school, work, or even something as small as cleaning up your room, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Sometimes we become so overwhelmed we reach our breaking point. It happens to the best of us.

Here’s how I deal with feeling overwhelmed. Hopefully, these tips will inspire you to take charge of your emotions! Go tackle that thing head on!

Take a shower. Let the warm water wash away your anxieties, and just focus on cleaning yourself up (literally and physically). Do a little self-care while you’re at it--a nice face mask or lotion should do the trick--whatever makes you feel “clean.”

Drink some water. A lot of the times I feel crappy because I’m dehydrated. Drink some water or maybe some soothing herbal tea. Say no to caffeine because that will do the opposite of what we’re trying to accomplish.

Go outside. Even if it’s just standing outside and taking a few deep breaths. Try to notice the scenery around you. Notice what’s beautiful about it. Notice how lucky you are to be where you are.

Move around. Do some yoga… or maybe some heavy lifting. Whatever makes you happy! It’s a nice distraction and you’ll feel so much better afterward.

Cook. You need to eat anyway, so why not turn on some music and treat yourself with something yummy?

Distract yourself. Grab a good book, movie, etc. Write a bit, call up a friend… just try to stop thinking about whatever it is that’s bugging you.

And finally, once you’re ready, do what needs to be done to the best of your ability. Journal or write out your thoughts if that helps.

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, especially when in a world full of deadlines. It can be difficult to take things one step at a time, and that’s okay! Feel the emotion. Then, take little steps to do what you need to do.
