Self-Care (Pandemic Edition)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of coronavirus.


With a pandemic comes mass panic: school and universities have been canceled for the rest of the year, people are raiding grocery stores, shutting themselves off from society in the safety of their homes. The internet, at least the part I follow, has been kind to those feeling overwhelmed because of social distancing.


...which is fantastic! The fact that we have things to keep ourselves entertained is something we can easily take for granted. Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat… social media is filled with resources to keep worries at bay. (you could also go old school and take up a nice book, learn how to knit, whatever suits your fancy). The possibilities are endless!


A lot of these possibilities involve self-care. Quick at-home workouts, easy recipes, and crafting ideas have taken the internet by storm, so in the midst of it all, I want to share what I do to keep myself healthy and happy! Hopefully, this will inspire you to take better care of yourselves and use your free time to your advantage!


1. Exercise (with FitOn)


Not sponsored! I found this app through an ad on Pinterest--it’s one of the best apps I’ve downloaded! FitOn offers free at-home workouts to target your personal fitness goals. They have everything from bedtime workouts to study break stretches! I like it because it reminds me of college where the fitness classes are free:) Whatever your fitness goals are, I HIGHLY recommend this app to boost your immunity with exercise!


2. DRINK. WATER.


I heard from one of my dance instructors that if you feel like you’re coming down with something, sip water or hot tea every 30 minutes or so. According to legend, your beverage of choice will flush the icky stuff into your stomach, where it will kill the virus. I don’t have scientific evidence that this works, but regardless it’s important to STAY HYDRATED. Update: It turns out this is a myth, but it’s still important to drink water! So drink water!


3. Journal


I started bullet journaling at the beginning of the month, and I wish I had started sooner. I’m starting to hold myself accountable for things I should be doing (e.g. stretching at night, getting enough sleep), but I’m holding myself accountable in a fun and creative way! I love that I can decorate my journal however I want, and keep track of the things I want to keep track of (song favorites, lyrics, etc.). There’s something so beautiful and grounding about pen on paper--try it! The results might surprise you :)


4. Spices (i.e. TURMERIC)


Maybe you don’t have access to turmeric, which is okay! There are plenty of cheap turmeric teas out there which will also do the trick, but the RESULTS I’ve seen from putting a little bit of turmeric in my oatmeal every morning is ASTONISHING. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, so it’s great for your immune system. Turmeric stains so yes, it will turn your food orange, but I can barely taste it (which is what I love about it). My favorite thing to eat in the morning is oatmeal mixed with cinnamon and turmeric. If you have access to those spices, USE THEM (Ginger is also great!). Let me know if you see any results! In addition to recovering from colds quicker, I’ve noticed my skin has cleared up and I have a lot more energy throughout the day (I’m young so that also might have something to do with it). If you can, try incorporating turmeric into your food!


5. Music (i.e. mediation music)


WARNING: not everyone’s cup of tea. There’s so much music on YouTube for every situation. It’s honestly unnerving. Music for sore throat, anxiety, manifesting love… whatever you want, YouTube has got your back. I like to play “music for studying or concentration” when I’m studying, and when I go to sleep? Music to calm nerves, anxiety, etc. Having a nice ambiance playing (SOFTLY!) throughout the night is really comforting--it’s gotten me through a lot of emotional rollercoasters. So try it out! Not for you? Find what works best for you!


These are a few of the ways I practice self-care. I’ve become much more diligent now that I’m working from home! I hope they inspire you to learn more about yourself and the beautiful being that you are.
